This is a 1915-1925 koa ukulele made by Leonardo Nunes in Los Angeles, CA. Leonardo Nunes was one of the better known native Hawaiian ukulele builders during the first period of the instrument's popularity from the early 1910s to just before the Depression. He was the son of Manuel Nunes, the Portuguese/Hawaiian maker who billed himself as "Inventor of the Ukulele" in the 1910s. Leonardo left the Manuel Nunes firm and Hawaii in the mid-1910's to settle in Los Angeles, quickly setting up shop to build Ukuleles there. Nunes' ukes retain a totally Hawaiian character, built in the original Iberian-influenced style using native Hawaiian koa wood.

This is the second Nunes that I have for sale (the first has sold). I did not work on this instrument; it didn't need any. This ukulele is being sold for the estate of a friend who passed last year. He loved Hawaiian music and had a fine collection of modern and vintage ukes and slide guitars. I'll be listing more soon including a second Nunes uke. He had a great eye and always took care of his instruments and this one is no exception. The finish is in excellent condition with no discernible wear.

The body and neck are made of koa. The top is beautifully flamed. The back is designed with a slight convex arch. It has the original wooden friction pegs and comes with the original canvas case.

Structurally, it is in excellent condition with no splits or cracks. It plays beautifully and has a fabulous tone!

This is a rare early uke from one of the greats of Hawaiian Instrument building. Antiques Road Show valued one of these at 1,000 in 2016. In the interests of closing the estate I will sell this one for $550.00.

that's is a great price for a Leonardo Nunes Uke in such good condition! You can own a vintage uke at a working musician's price. Comes with it's original canvas case.
